Can You Take Wegovy Tablets at Night? Timing and Routine

Updated: Jul 22

Wegovy tablets are meant to be taken first thing in the morning, not at night. Oral semaglutide is only absorbed when the stomach is genuinely empty, followed by 30 minutes with nothing else to eat or drink. Most people already have an empty stomach when they wake, which is why the tablet works best taken first thing.

Wegovy tablets (oral semaglutide) were licensed by the MHRA for weight management in UK adults on 11 June 2026, and are available privately rather than on the NHS [1]. This page explains how the medicine is designed to be taken. It is general information, not a personal instruction to start, stop, or change anything.

Why is Wegovy meant to be taken in the morning?

Oral semaglutide is only absorbed while the stomach is empty. It is a delicate molecule that the digestive system would otherwise dismantle before it reached the blood, so the tablet includes an ingredient that ushers a small fraction of the dose across the stomach wall. That only happens in the first few minutes after the tablet dissolves, and only when nothing else is present to get in the way, which is why food, another drink, or a large glass of water all interfere. The mechanics of that process are covered in how Wegovy tablets survive the stomach.

The licensed instructions come straight from it. Take the tablet on an empty stomach after fasting for at least 8 hours, using only a small sip of water to get it down, then leave at least 30 minutes before anything else follows, including other tablets [1][2]. Most people have already gone 8 hours without food by the time they wake, which is the practical reason the tablet is taken first thing.

What happens if you take it at night?

Taken before bed, after an evening of meals and drinks, most of the dose is likely lost. In a controlled study of dosing conditions, when oral semaglutide was given after food rather than fasting, 14 of 25 people had little or no measurable drug in their blood [3]. Absorption depends on an empty stomach, and by late evening the stomach rarely is.

The 30 minutes after the tablet carry as much weight as the empty stomach before it. The same study measured drug levels at different waiting times and found they rose the longer people held off eating, with the biggest gain between waiting 15 minutes and 30 [3]. Tired and within reach of a drink or a snack, most people find that window harder to protect at night than at the start of the day.

Your Wegovy tablet routine, step by step

1. Take the tablet as soon as you wake, before any food or drink.

2. Swallow it whole with a small sip of water, up to about 120 mL, which is half a glass.

3. Wait at least 30 minutes, with nothing to eat, drink, or swallow.

4. After the 30 minutes, eat, drink, and take your other medicines as usual [2].

Each step in that sequence guards the same brief window of absorption. The full version, including how to fold it into an existing morning habit, is in how to take Wegovy tablets.

What can you have during the 30 minutes?

Only the small sip of water used to swallow the tablet. Coffee, tea, a mint, or chewing gum all break the fast, because each disturbs the empty-stomach conditions the tablet needs. Water has a threshold of its own: a sip of 50 to 120 mL makes no meaningful difference to absorption, while a full 240 mL glass reduced drug levels by around 40 percent in testing [3]. A small sip helps the tablet down; a large drink washes some of the effect away.

Can the timing ever work later in the day?

The medicine responds to an empty stomach and a protected 30 minutes, not to the hour on the clock. A time you can keep to every day matters more than the specific hour, because semaglutide stays active in the body for days rather than hours. If your routine does not fit a conventional morning, the timing is worth settling with your prescriber.

From the clinic

Ali Salih, the GPhC pharmacist prescriber who reviews these articles, reframes the timing question the way it comes up in practice.

Does getting the timing right change the results?

Timing decides whether the medicine is absorbed at all, so everything else depends on it. Taken correctly, oral semaglutide is effective: in the OASIS 4 trial, adults on the 25 mg tablet lost about 14 percent of their body weight on average by around 15 months, compared with about 2 percent on placebo [4]. For someone starting at 100 kg (about 15 stone 10 lb), 14 percent is close to 14 kg, a little over 2 stone. Trial participants are closely supported and the figure is an average, so everyday results land on both sides of it. None of that is reachable if the dose never gets into the blood.

What dose will you be on, and does the routine change?

The routine stays the same at every strength. Treatment starts at 1.5 mg once daily and steps up through 4 mg, 9 mg, and 25 mg, with at least a month at each level [1]. The lower starting doses let your body adjust and keep early side effects manageable; they are not weaker versions of the same tablet on the way to a real one. At every step the conditions hold: empty stomach, a sip of water, 30 minutes clear. If you miss a dose, the general rule is to skip it and take the next at the usual time rather than doubling up, with your prescriber's advice taking priority.

The bottom line

The morning works because it is the easiest time to give the tablet an empty stomach and a clean 30 minutes. If a standard morning is genuinely impossible, the same conditions can be met at another consistent time, decided with your prescriber rather than improvised. Getting those conditions right is not a detail; it is what lets the medicine work at all.

Frequently asked questions

Can I take my Wegovy tablet before bed?

By bedtime the stomach is rarely empty, so much less of the dose is absorbed [3]. The tablet is designed for first thing in the morning, after the overnight fast.

When is the best time of day to take Wegovy tablets?

Whenever you can give it an empty stomach, a sip of water, and a clear 30 minutes, every day. For most people that is on waking [1][2]. Keeping to the same time matters more than the exact hour.

I work night shifts. When should I take it?

The conditions may be met when you wake for your day rather than in the clock morning. Plan this with your prescriber, who can fit it around your other medicines and help you settle on a time you can keep to.

Does it matter if I take it at a slightly different time each day?

A steady daily time is best. Semaglutide stays active for days, so aim for a rhythm you can repeat rather than precision on any single day. If your timing regularly drifts by hours, mention it to your prescriber.

Can I take levothyroxine with my Wegovy tablet?

Both need an empty stomach and cannot share the morning slot. A common approach is to move levothyroxine to bedtime, at least three hours after your last meal, which leaves the morning free for the Wegovy tablet [2]. Agree any change with your prescriber rather than making it on your own.

Are Wegovy tablets available on the NHS?

Not currently. They were licensed by the MHRA in June 2026 and are available on private prescription while NICE evaluates them [1].

If you are considering treatment
